Give it Your Best Shot
Give It Your Best Shot is both a juried show (with awards) and “just” a show, giving participants an opportunity to present their work to the public. You are invited to enter a maximum of two prints, which will be hung in our huge display space in the East Hall of the Convention Center. We’re talking about a lot of prints; every year we receive around two hundred entries. It makes for a beautiful and interesting show!
The symposium presenters then choose their favorite two prints. And the participants also get a chance to vote on their favorite image. These Speakers Choice and Peoples Choice awards are then announced and shown on Sunday morning as a fun way to end the event. Winners receive a certificate and a small cash award.
Entry Details:
- maximum 2 prints per person
- entry fee is $5.00 per print
- mat size is limited to 30” in the longest dimension
- prints should be framed, wired and ready to hang
- your name MUST NOT BE VISIBLE on the print ◊ if you have signed the print or mat it must be covered so that it is not visible
- entries will be accepted in the East Hall between 8:00 a.m. Friday and 12:00 p.m. Saturday
Outback RoundUp
Range Magazine sponsors this contest, which could launch your career and lead to fame and fortune (you just need to redefine fame and fortune). The Shooting the West Committee helps with judging and other administrative duties (like commenting on and returning images). Winners are announced and shown at Shooting the West, and published in Range Magazine. Winning images are often subsequently used in the Real Buckaroo Calendar, to illustrate feature articles in Range, and for advertising future contests. This is a great opportunity to get your images into the public eye, and learn about the intricacies of the publishing market.

My Shooting the West: Memories and Images
Juried Show and Presentations
This is an opportunity for STW participants to share their favorite STW pictures and memories with the audience. The STW Committee will choose twelve, five-minute presentations (from among all submissions) that will be shown Saturday evening. Finger food and a no host bar will also be available.
With the advent of reasonably priced digital projectors and excellent presentation software, the “slide show” is making a comeback. Polished presentations should be a part of every photographer’s repertoire, both for entertainment and marketing. Even black & white fine art printers need the capability to present their work to large audiences (think about John Sexton’s presentation for STW XVI). This will be a good chance for participants to work on their presentation skills.
All images should have a connection to Shooting the West i.e., pictures of the event itself (speakers, people in the hallways, parties in the bars, dancers, etc.) pictures made while on Shooting the West field trips, or pictures made within a 100-mile radius of Winnemucca on your way to and from the event. You are on your honor to include images that you feel are in some way connected to STW.
Contest and Presentation Details:
- see above for content requirements
- images should be in good taste… no nudity or over-the-top risqué images please ◊ we know that this can be a sensitive issue and very difficult to quantify… but we also know that you know what we mean… so use good judgment and remember that this is family entertainment!
- all submissions must be in Apple Keynote or Microsoft PowerPoint or DVD (readable in any DVD player) format ◊ this covers the two most widely used presentation programs on the two platforms, and most other programs will output to DVD format
- maximum program length is 5 minutes
- there will be no live narration, so presentations must be self-contained and self-advancing
- submissions must be postmarked by February 15th, 2008
- all submissions not selected for the show will be returned with comments, and must include a SASE for that purpose — winner’s submissions will be returned after the show on Saturday night
- include an email address and/or phone number for us to contact you
- submissions should be sent via CD or DVD to:
